One of the great things about wind and hydro electric is that it's produced 24/7. The problem is that our peak usage is during the day. Shifting the power from night to day typically is done via toxic batteries. Calmac has created a storage system uses the energy generated during off-peak hours to make ice. That stored ice is then used for cooling purposes during high-demand daytime hours. They claim that the system can reduce electricity demand for cooling by 20 - 40 percent.
